Emo, sex and community portals
Since I’m a person striving for constant intellectual satisfaction, a number of complex questions have entered my mind. Here is a list of them. Answers are very welcome.
1. Why is it that the vast majority of contemporary female writers are only successful if they write about sex? If a man does the same, he is called sexist, chauvinist or a macho. However, if a woman writes a memoir of her sexlife or a blog-like book about her encounter with men (the more famous, the better) it is a huge success and is considered to be something respectable. Tisza Kata, for example, explains that she wote her “book” (collection of short stories about men) in order to be able to work for the culture section of conservative newspapers. Is this the only perspective then? To write about sex and famous guys and sex with those famous guys is the only way for women to be successful? In a world where we are constantly babbling about feminism and equal rights. Come on, I have to laugh!
2. What makes emo music different from plain rock? The reason why it makes me wonder is because I do realize the characteristics of emo style, but cannot locate emo music. Bands like Bullet For My Valentine, My Chemical Romance or AFI sound like plain light rock to me, with a touch of cali-punk. The choice of topic is the traditional rock’n'roll theme: why did you leave me, I hate to be alone, I want to revolt against the world and the like. So: what makes emo emo?
3. Why is it that community portals tend to stop giving a fuck as soon as they reach a certain number of unique users and daily clicks? Look at myspace, for example, and the way it is being handled… just because its owners prefer to linger over their cocktails instead of correcting system errors or working on further progress. Is everything like this? It’s like when a new pub opens and everything is cheap and good, and in a couple of months, by the time the pub gains popularity, they double the prices and lower the quality of products. Is quality only an option in the introductory part of the business and ceases to be an issue as basic financial stability is granted/surpassed?
